GNU Free Documentation License How do I start placing money in an index fund? Q. I've recently come into a little bit of money, and would like to place the money in an index fund like the S&P 500. This is the first time I've really invested, so I would like to start small, say around $500, but I'm unsure how I would go about actually doing it. Can I do it myself, or is a middle man necessary? Asked by crazydavythe1st - Wed Dec 27 03:12:55 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are two ways to invest in an index fund: 1. Buy shares in an index fund. (ex. Vanguard 500 Index Fund, tracks S&P 500) 2. Buy shares in a ETF. (ex SPY, tracks S&P 500) In practice, these two ways are very similar. The difference is that index funds usually have no transaction costs for buying/selling, but can only be bought through certain authorized brokers and might charge a fee if you have a low account balance. ETFs are traded on the stock market and can be bought through *any* brokerage (ex. etrade), but you will almost certainly be charged a fee for buying/selling. In general, it's better to go with an index fund if you'll be making regular investments and with an ETF if you'll be buying/selling less frequently. I want to create an index for about 50 stocks in a portfolio to track their performance. I want the index to be similiat to the S&P 500 so that it will account for stock splits and other factors. Asked by KevinT - Sun Nov 23 20:45:24 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. In a spread sheet maybe you could multiply the stock price by the outstanding shares then divide by the total. But that would give you an index that is weighted by market cap. Or you could just add up all the stock prices and divide by 50. Then if one split you would have to add an adjust factor to that particular stock as in for a 2 for 1 split that would be stock price times 2. That would result in stocks with higher prices having a greater influence. Or in a stock tracking portfolio where you can enter dollar amounts just put in the same $1,000 starting value for each stock making your index start at $50,000 then track the ups and downs. That would let you see how the individual stocks perform with the individual values at any… [cont.] Answered by Thor - Sun Nov 23 21:40:09 2008 How to make a index card necklace without cutting it into pieces or reconnecting it?
Q. This is a geometry assignment that i can't just seem to get. This is all my teacher gave us: take a 3in by 5in card and cut it in a such way as to create a necklace large enough to fit over your head. The index card is not to be cut into pieces or reconnected. Please help! Its due tomorrow. Asked by AlliCat - Tue Aug 18 20:35:50 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Since I can't put a drawing here, but have to do it in words, and am less articulate than I like, I will give you the first step along the way, then explain where to go from there. I suggest that you simply draw what I describe, not start cutting, unless you have lots of cards. Usually index cards are 3.5" x 5" Place the card in front of you with the 5" sides going right/left and the 3" sides to/away. Starting from the center of the left hand 3" side, make a cut going 3.5" to the right. Sorry, but I gotta use (x,y) notation to put this in text. Now make a U shaped cut, from (.75,2.25) to (4.25, 2.25) to 4.25, .75) to (.75, .75). This cut never touches the edge of the card, nor does it touch the first horizontal cut. This cut forms… [cont.] Answered by redbeardthegiant - Tue Aug 18 22:50:51 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "index" US Stock Futures Gain, Boosted By Earnings, Jobs Data - Wall Street Journal
