New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island), and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Māori language name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing but in free association); Tokelau; and the Ross Dependency (New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica). New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation: it is situated about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, a number of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced. The majority of New Zealand's population is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority. Asians and non-Māori Polynesians are also significant minority groups, especially in urban areas. The most commonly spoken language is English. New Zealand is a developed country that ranks highly in international comparisons on many topics, including education, economic freedom, and lack of corruption. Its cities also consistently rank among the world's most liveable. Elizabeth II, as the Queen of New Zealand, is the country's head of state and is represented by a Governor-General, and executive political power is exercised by the Cabinet of New Zealand. Requirements to move to New Zealand as a marine biologist? Is New Zealand looking for young marine biologists? I live in Virginia currently and would love to move to New Zealand as soon as I get out of college. What do I have to do to make this happen? Asked by Evan - Mon Aug 10 00:26:36 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. Presumably you will be studying Marine Biology at college in the USA and would look to come to New Zealand already possessing a degree. You don't say how much longer you will be at college and when you expect to graduate. If that's not the case I have included a link to Victoria University in Wellington, NZ. They offer studies in Marine Biology both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Generally, to get into New Zealand as a permanent resident you need to either have pots of money or a skill set that is in high demand. The latter usually results in a job offer and acceptance by NZ Immigration to come and stay permanently. The government publish skills shortage lists (short and long term); they are updated from time to time and give an… [cont.] Answered by johno - Tue Aug 11 18:56:13 2009 What are the beaches in New Zealand like and how much is temporary housing near them? Q. I'm planning a trip down to New Zealand on a working holiday visa. The primary reason for my trip is surfing but that's obviously not the only thing I will be doing. I hear the north island is better for surfing but the beaches are rocky and less forgiving than the south island. I also have no idea where I'll be staying or if I'll be able to afford any kind of apartment or room. If you could shine a light on any of the subjects it would be greatly appreciated. Asked by Timmers - Tue Nov 3 16:48:12 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. The north island would be probably be the place for you. I've never really thought of the SOuth Island having surfing spots. Try Auckland, theres 100 beaches within an hours drive from it. You'll have a huge selection. You could try flatting you can look up renting a apartment too: Just google where the good spots are, you might want to go half and half and stay in the South half your trip and North the other half. Q. In 1901 when Australia became a federation, they asked New Zealand if they would like to be part of the federation, but New Zealand decided not to be part of the federation. What differences could there have been at this point, that was a reason not to join with australia? And what are the cultural differences now between the two?
